Memories of Tokyo

For its history, its fairy tale gardens, majestic architecture, and of course the appeal that comes with the cultural shock of being exposed to a different environment – among many other wonders it has to offer – Japan had always been a dream destination that until not long ago was not in my immediate plans, being in Colombia the trip with connecting flights and all is a hell of a long trip, but thankfully of late I am a fair bit closer to this world reknown country which rates so highly on many lists for lots of different reasons.

As you probably noticed by visiting my Instagram the main motive of our trip to Tokyo was coverage of Tokyo Fashion Week, which in addition to harsh weather didn’t leave much time to see the city in all its splendor, and we lacked a bit of that iconic Sakura display the city is famous for…april being the perfect time to view the magnificent blossoming, but it didn’t stop us from discovering some iconic spots and we squeezed as much as we could between shows. I want to share with you a brief collection of images which gives some insight into my experiences away from the shows and into the streets.

Por su historia, su majestuosa arquitectura, sus jardines como salidos de cuentos de hadas y por supuesto por el atractivo que supone el choque cultural al ser expuestos a otro escenario – entre muchas otras maravillas que tiene por ofrecer – Japón siempre había sido un destino soñado que hasta hace poco estuvo por fuera de mis planes inmediatos; estando en Colombia el viaje a dicho destino implicaba un largo y dispendioso trayecto, pero el estar en Australia, hizo posible mi acercamiento a este renombrado lugar que  puntea por su excelencia en muchos ámbitos a nivel global.

Como probablemente habrán notado al visitar mi Instagram, el principal motivo de mi viaje a Tokyo fue el cubrimiento de Tokyo Fashion Week, que en adición al severo clima, no dejó mucho espacio para ver la ciudad en todo su esplendor, y nos quedamos cortos con el despliegue de Sakura por el cual la ciudad es también memorable, siendo abril la mejor época para tal propósito. pero ello no nos impidió descubrir otros sitios de interés y comprimimos tanto como pudimos entre evento y evento; de ello quiero compartir una breve colección de imágenes para describir esta experiencia mas desde la perspectiva urbana que de la moda.

The city is massive on many levels but it functions extremely well, there is no end in site to humans and buildings alike, excellent   infrastructure combined with Japanese ingenuity and work ethic act in unison to the point where chaos is surprisingly non existent despite this being the most populous city on the planet.

We spent most of our time in Shibuya, where most of the fashion events were held, our hotel was also in the area and this happens to be one of the busiest and most interesting parts of the city, shopping, food, alternative lifestyles and people mixed in with the masses in suits awaits the visitor. ,

La ciudad en si es masiva en muchos aspectos, pero todo fluye en armonía, excelente infraestructura que combinada con el ingenio y la etica japonesa actúan al unisono al punto en que sorpresivamente no existe caos a pesar de ser la ciudad mas poblada del planeta.

Pasamos la mayor parte del tiempo en Shibuya, en donde se llevaron a cabo la mayoría de los eventos de TFW, el hotel también en el area, lo que resulto conveniente al ser una de las partes mas movidas e interesantes de la ciudad, compras, gastronomía, opciones para variados estilos de vida y gente perdiéndose en las masas, son atractivos que un visitante puede esperar allí.

Amongst all the modern stores and buildings its never too hard to find something more traditional, many times just beyond the glitz and glamour of high end stores and shopping centers there are shrines and temples offering a tranquil setting away from the hustle and bustle.

Entre el modernismo de los edificios y establecimientos, no resulta difícil encontrar algo mas tradicional, mas allá del brillo y glamour de las tiendas high end y centros comerciales son comunes los santuarios y templos que ofrecen un escape a la tranquilidad lejos del agite y bullicio citadinos.

The city has a fantastic energy at night, full of lights, sounds and of course people, the best of all ..late night shopping!

En las noches la ciudad tiene una fantástica energía, acentuada por las luces, los sonidos y por supuesto la gente, – lo mejor de todo, compras hasta tarde!

As you wander the city…Heart of pop culture – Manga best known as the popular Japanese comics,  have become an integral part of modern Japanese life and culture,

Al deambular la ciudad, el corazón de su cultura pop – Manga o mejor conocido como el popular comic Japonés es parte integral de su cultura y estilo de vida.

The timeless Kimono – Although locals embraced western influences the Kimono kept its status and remains the ultimate dress at important events, see a dedicated post about this iconic garment here

There was no lack of interesting vehicles in Tokyo, high tech motorbikes, supercars, even california style lowriders were on display.

No podían faltar el despliegue de interesantes vehículos en Tokyo, – motocicletas de alta gama, super carros e inclusive los lowriders californianos

Takeshita Street, as part of every tourist itinerary shopping is a must and while you can find the big brands everywhere a bit of the local street bargains is another way to take in the citys flavour.  But for visitors like me Takeshita Street wasn’t just about the shopping but about a close encounter with what the Tokyo street culture is all about…

Calle Takeshita, las compras siempre forman parte del itinerario del turista, pero mientras las grandes marcas las encuentras en todos lados, una dosis de rebajas callejeras es un buen modo de saborear una ciudad. Pero para visitantes como yo, la Calle Takeshita mas allá las compras constituye un encuentro con lo todo lo que la ultura urbana de Tokyo tiene por ofrecer.

The younger crowds of Tokyo are known for their alternative and bold sense of style, being of their favourite shopping hubs Takeshita Street…

Los jóvenes de Tokyo son conocidos por su sentido de estilo alternativo y osado, siendo Takeshita un destino de compras infaltable.

En busca de un kimono y otros ajuares tradicionales como souvenir o como opción de vestuario? Si, definitivamente aquí lo encontrarás. Turistas de todo el mundo se fascinan con esta maravilla japonesa, por mi parte no pude evitar llevarme algunos.

Meiji Shrine

Founded in 1920 its dedicated to the souls of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, it is Tokyo’s largest and most famous Shinto shrine. It is walking distance from Takeshita street, in a beautiful forest that covers an area of about 175 acres. The evergreen forest consists of around 120,000 trees of 365 different species, donated by people from all regions of Japan. The forest is an oasis in the middle of Tokyo and is a popular recreation and relaxation spot where the busy sights and sounds of Tokyo are quickly replaced by the tranquil forest upon entry to the shrine grounds.

As an impressive entry point to this magnificent shrine is The Giant Torii Shrine Gate constructed from Japanese cypress and is one of the largest in Japan. The tree used to create the torii gate was more than 1,500 years old.

Santuario Meiji

Fundado en 1920 es dedicado a la memoria de el emperador Meiji y su esposa la emperatriz Shoken; es el mas grande y mas famoso santuario de Tokyo y se encuentra a pasos de distancia de la Calle Takeshita, en un hermoso bosque que cubre el area en 175 acres. El imperecedero bosque verde consta de 120.000 arboles de 365 diferentes clases, donados por personas de todas las religiones en Japón y constituye un oasis en el medio de Tokyo como un predilecto sitio de esparcimiento y relajación, en donde el bullicio de la ciudad rápidamente es reemplazado por la tranquilidad forestal .

Como un impresionante punto de entrada a este magnifico santuario esta The Giant Torii Shrine Gate, una de las mas grandes en el pais,  construida con ciprés japonés. El árbol usado para construir la puerta tiene mas de 1.500 años

The Giant Torii Shrine Gate

As you walk towards the shrine a huge collection of sake barrels will be spotted.  They are called kazaridaru in Japanese and are a decorative display. Sake traditionally has been a connection between the gods and people in Japan. These sake barrels are offered every year to the enshrined deities at Meiji Jingu Shrine. They have been donated by sake brewers from around Japan to the shrine with the sake being used for shrine ceremonies and festivals.

Al marchar al interior del santuario se visualiza una colección de barriles de sake. Son llamados Kazaridaru en japonés y tienen una función decorativa. El Sake ha sido tradicionalmente conocido como vínculo  entre los dioses y la gente de Japón. Estos barriles de Sake son ofrecidos cada año a las mas veneradas deidades del santuario y han sido donados por productores de Sake de todo el país, siendo usados para las ceremonias y festivales en dicho lugar.

Located at the left once you enter, is the cleansing station or Chozuya, before entering a shrine people purify themselves using the ladle to wash first one hand and then the other.

Ubicada a la izquierda una vez se ingresa, se encuentra la estación de lavado o Chozuva, antes de entrar al santuario la tradición impone purificarse usando el cucharón, para lavar una mano a la vez.

Ueno Park..

Established in 1873 Ueno park is a vast extention best known for its stunning blossoming during spring and one of the best spots in Tokyo for sakura viewing. Although we didn’t see it during full blossom (this usually occurs a couple of weeks later) this is also where the Cherry Blossoms festival is held and has drawn over ten million visitors a year, making it Japan’s most popular city park.

Parque Ueno .

Establecido en 1873 el Parque Ueno es una vasta extension mejor conocida por su florecer primaveral y uno de los mejores epicentros en Tokyo para apreciar el Sakura. Aunque nosotros no lo vimos en pleno ya que estuvimos a mediados de Marzo y dicho espectáculo  acontece dos semanas después. Aquí es donde también se celebra el festival de Cherry Blossoms atrayendo a mas de diez millones de visitantes al año, haciendo de este el parque mas popular en Japón.

The Kill Bill Restaurant

A restaurant is always on the list no matter where your travelling, one of our food highlights was the Gonpachi restaurant in Roppongi, – a favourite among celebs – best known as the Kill Bill Restaurant, it served as inspiration for Quentin Tarantino and some famous scenes in the movie apart from being a go to place for many celebrities over the years as photos on the wall near the entrance attest to, Clinton, Stallone, Depp, Keanu Reeves etc etc.

Sorry the lighting wasnt that great to capture the foodporn,  it came in small portions one by one…an I was too hungry to photograph it but anyone who is a fan of Japanese food must check this place out, the food, the menu, the ambiance -..simply indulgent.!

El Restaurante Kill Bill

Por obvias razones los restaurantes siempre están en la lista del viajero, y uno de nuestros destacados gastronómicos fue el restaurante Gonpachi en Roppongi,  mejor conocido por servir como inspiración a Quentin Tarantino en algunas de sus famosas escenas en la película, aparte de ser un destino predilecto entre muchas celebridades como consta en la pared de la fama justo a la entrada, contando con Clinton, Stallone, Depp, Keanu Reeves etc etc como algunos de sus mas celebres comensales.

Lastimosamente la iluminación no era la mejor para capturar la usual Foodporn para instagram, venia en pequeñas porciones y ademas tenia mucha hambre para dejar enfriar el festín con la toma de fotos, pero todo aquel que ame la comida japonesa debe visitar este sitio si se encuentra en Tokyo, el menú y el ambiente, son simplemente una indulgencia.!

The Kill Bill Restaurant “Wall of Fame”

Looking for a panoramic view? No other structure than the Tokyo Tower to provide you with a 360 degree of magnificent skyline, and to give you a much better perspective of the city…

Built in 1958 its actually a communications tower that serves also as an observatory and it is the second-tallest structure in Japan at 332.9 mts whose shape reminds me of the Eiffel Tower. Apart from shops and restaurants visitors have two observation decks. The Main Observatory is located at 150 metres (490 ft), while the smaller Special Observatory reaches a height of 249.6 metres (819 ft).

Buscando una vista panorámica? No hay mejor estructura que la Torre de Tokyo, para proporcionar 360 grados de magnifico horizonte urbano y dar una mejor perspectiva de la ciudad.

Construida en 1958 es de hecho una torre de telecomunicaciones que además funciona como observatorio y es la segunda estructura mas alta en Japón con 332.9 metros cuya forma nos recuerda a la Torre Eiffel. Ademas de tiendas y restaurantes los visitantes tienen dos estancias, – el observatorio principal ubicado a 150 metros mientras que el mas pequeño alcanza una altura de 249 mts

Zojoji Temple

Once spotted from the tower, we had to see it…. the  Zojoji Temple is the head temple of the Jodo sect of Japanese Buddhism  in the Kanto Region

Una vez visualizado desde la torre, teníamos que conocerlo….el templo Zojoji es el templo principal de la secta Jodo del Budismo japonés en la region del Canto

Built in the year 1393 and moved to its present location in 1598 by Tokugawa Leyasu who selected it as his family temple. A mausoleum of the Tokugawa family can be found on the temple grounds. Most of Zojoji’s buildings are recent reconstructions except for the main entrance gate, the Sangedatsumon, which has survived the many past fires, earthquakes and wars and dates from 1622.

But above everything one outstanding spot where to be delighted with of of a kind landscape, a dreamy location in spring full of trees and gardens.

Construido en el año 1393 y trasladado a su presente ubicación en 1598 por Tokugawa Leyasu quien lo escogió como templo familiar, un mausoleo de la familia Tokugawa puede ser encontrado en los cimientos del templo. Muchos de los edificaciones del Zojoji son recientes reconstrucciones excepto por la entrada principal – el Sangedatsumon que data de 1622 sobreviviendo incendios, terremotos y guerras.

Pero entre otras cosas constituye un sobresaliente lugar en donde deleitarse con un paisaje inigualable, así como una locación de  ensueño en primavera al estar rodeado por jardines e incontables árboles. 

Last by not least, The National art center of Tokyo

When travelling paying a visit to a museum or gallery is always a good idea to connect with its past and contemporary art. The National art center of Tokyo building was designed by Kisho Kurokawa and It is one of the largest exhibition sites in Asia, but unlike Japan’s other national art museums, NACT is an ’empty museum’, without a collection, permanent display, and curators. but it accommodates temporary exhibitions sponsored and curated by other organizations. Conveniently while we were in Tokyo The Issey Miyake exhibition had just started with a restrospective display of this renowned japanese designer whose work can be considered precisely as wearable art…

Por último pero no menos importante, el Centro de Arte Nacional de Tokyo

Al viajar hacer una breve visita a museos o galerías es siempre una buena manera de conectar con el arte pasado y contemporáneo de un lugar. El edificio del Centro de Arte Nacional de Tokyo fue diseñado por Kisho Kurokawa y es uno de los mas grandes centros de exhibición en toda Asia, pero a diferencia de otros en su clase en Japón, este es un museo vacío, sin colecciones u obras pero que si hospeda exhibiciones temporales y curadas por otras organizaciones. Convenientemente durante nuestro paso por Tokyo dio inicio la retrospectiva del aclamado diseñador japonés Issey Miyake cuyo trabajo es considerado precisamente arte vestible.
