What to wear for a black tie occasion
Going from excitement to anxiety is a common mix of feelings once we get invited to a black tie event! While this dress code is more a reference for men to wear a black dinner jacket and tie, it can be quite diverse and broad for us ladies since getting dressed up according to black tie can be very relative – what’s consider formal for some, might be a bit slack for others, hence the fear of showing up either overdressed or under-dressed which is often perceived as a lack of etiquette.
If you get an invitation for a black tie event, before getting anxious and doubtful let’s consider a few key factors such as: Is it an outdoor or indoor event? Is it at the Opera or at a social club? Is it a charity ball, or a weeding? These aspects will guide us through the possible options. In addition to how lavish or low key the event can be, it will ultimately depend on how practical or meticulous you are when it comes to glamming up – A suit will be just fine for some ladies while others need certain level of fanciness.
Note – We have interpreted black tie dress code for women with floor length dresses strictly since the term black tie took place in the Edwardian era when all ladies attires were floor-length. But time changes and with it the length of women’s dresses and skirts, so ankle, knee or below the knee lengths are safe and proper options too, we just have to pay attention to the black tie variation on the invite to see when each of them are suitable. Let’s say you’re invited to a charity ball, which often comes with a “Black tie mandatory”, then nothing less than a floor length gown will be appropriate. But if it is the case of a black tie party with dance floor and everything you’ll be perfectly fine with a knee length dress and that most likely be a ” Black tie optional”.
