Fashion Talks – Sam Jones from Polclothing
In the competetive world of fashion a designers talent and vision have to be complemented by perseverance and tenacity as key ingredients to accomplish a name and reputation as well as a path to success. With a market plagued with new proposals and avid competitors its´s intriguing to know which elements are the key successful factors differentiating one brand from another. Today I´m pleased to introduce Sam Jones, the Australian designer behind Polclothing who recently presented her label at the MBFWA runways last april. With Jones I discussed what it takes to acheive a reputation in the market as she has done, and how to gain a global reach since Pol Clothing can be found in more than 120 stockists world wide. Apart from being a new contemporary fashion reference her testimony and background are without a doubt particularly interesting for young aspiring designers and that´s why I´m glad to share this brief but illustrative interview.
When did you decide you wanted to be a designer? I always knew I wanted to be a designer, from a small child I would make all my own clothes, by 12 I was making clothes for friends and family, and they would pay me.
Tell us about Polclothings beginnings… We started with 12 knitwear designs only in selling in NSW when an agent approached me for my point of view. We found that our first collection was a success, and really then had to move forward.
What inspires you? Women inspire me, Wanting to make women feel comfortable and feminine, while comfortable in a fashionable way.
Based on your experience, what does it take for young designers to successfully establish as a brand? Determination and fearlessness. we have expanded gradually, as we are mindful of our business size and capabilities.
What does Polclothing stand for? POL is my best friends nick name.. She was always there for me growing up and still is today.
Key elements of your brand We generally use natural fibres and we are well known for our knitwear. We value highly our integrity and really want to elevate everyday style for women.
Your approach is global, but being an Aussie brand how much of that DNA can we find in Polclothing? We understand the aussie woman and her need for clothing that works for her, not to dominate her. We love her quirkiness.
In these days of the so called fashion forward, how do you keep things interesting and now? We rely on our shapes that look amazing on all figure types. We look closely at fits and a great fitting dress or pant can take you anywhere. our fabrics are also sourced globally from France and Italy, to China and Spain to get the best value and style.
What advice would you give to young designers? Persevere.
Last but not least, share your thoughts about your concept of elegance: To be comfortable in your own skin.

Her work is beautiful and so awesome that you got to do an interview with her. I love that she always made her own clothes and even made them for her friends at such a young age! So wonderful that she uses natural fibers as well to make her pieces! I would love a piece!
